Certificate in Human Communication in a Mediated World

This IU Online Undergraduate Certificate in Human Communication in a Mediated World is a response to the growing necessity for humans to learn to interact more effectively in a world where people frequently move in and out of traditional face-to-face and mediated communication situations. Our face-to-face communication is altered because of our mediated experiences, which are now an integral part of our society.

As a student in this program, you acquire the ability to understand and apply traditional and mediated communication theories appropriately and effectively in organizational, intercultural, interpersonal, persuasive, and mass-media communication contexts. In addition, you acquire the skills to examine, understand, and apply appropriate communication tools, processes, and strategies in computer-mediated environments.

Your IU Online Undergraduate Certificate in Human Communication in a Mediated World prepares you to work in business, government, education, the arts, and performance in such careers as communications specialist, direct sales representative, administration support specialist, account manager, retail manager, human resource associate, or recruiting specialist.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Know-about their place and time in society and culture from a variety of perspectives.
  • Understand-appreciate and respect the variety and complexity of other societies and cultures—across time and place—as the basis for successful interaction in the global context of the 21st century.
  • Be able to
    • find, analyze, evaluate, summarize, and apply information, drawing effectively on a variety of information sources and tools;
    • pose general as well as particular questions and propose creative solutions to those problems in different contexts—working independently and as members of teams;
    • communicate effectively in English to peers and professionals making effective use of a variety of communication modes, methods, and technologies; and
    • exercise ethically sound judgment in personal and professional situations and demonstrate responsible behavior as leaders as well as being able to work effectively in group or team projects.

Admission to the Certificate program in Human Communication in a Mediated World (COMM) requires the following:

  • a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0
  • to declare the certificate, complete the School of Liberal Arts online declaration form here.

Students who have not enrolled at IU Indianapolis may be considered for this certificate if they meet the above criteria and apply for Undergraduate Admission to IU Indianapolis and specify the Undergraduate Human Communication in a Mediated World Certificate as their objective. 

The certificate is NOT available to Communication Studies majors.

The Certificate program in Human Communication in a Mediated World (COMM) requires satisfactory completion of the following:

  • Only online courses offered by the Department of Communication Studies at IU Indianapolis count towards the certificate.
  • Each course must be completed with a minimum grade of C.
  • Successful completion of a total of 18 credit hours of courses, including:
    • COMM-C 316: Human Communication in a Digital Age (3 cr.)
    • Five elective courses (15 cr.) selected in consultation with the certificate director from the following list:
      • COMM-C 108: Listening (3 cr.)
      • COMM-C 180: Introduction to Interpersonal Communication (3 cr.)
      • COMM-C 223: Business and Professional Communication (3 cr.)
      • COMM-C 228: Introduction to Group Communication (3 cr.)
      • COMM-C 325: Interviewing Principles and Practices (3 cr.)
      • COMM-C 380: Organizational Communication (3 cr.)
      • COMM-C 394: Communication and Conflict (3 cr.)
      • COMM-C 395: Gender and Communication (3 cr.)
      • COMM-C 482: Intercultural Communication (3 cr.)
      • COMM-M 150: Mass Media and Contemporary Society (3 cr.)
      • COMM-M 210: Media Message Design (3 cr.)
      • COMM-M 215: Media Literacy (3 cr.)
      • COMM-R 310: Rhetoric, Society, and Culture (3 cr.)
      • COMM-R 321: Persuasion (3 cr.)
